Just a little something to brighten your day. I’m gonna curl up with my book and listen to the thunderstorm outside. :)

The Daughter of Smoke and Bone
Once upon a time an angel fell in love with a devil.
It did not even well.
I am a crazy, ravenous reader. I’m serious. I can finish a decent 250 page book in about two hours. Which sounds cool, but actually just makes me have to spend more money on books and by the time everyone else is done with the same one and wants to discuss (OMG, can you believe Gale?!) I’m onto something else. Wow, that sounded conceited.
Sorry about that.
I also skipped the teen lit phase when everyone else went through the teen lit phase (because I, at age 13, was too good for anything less than Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility. Which I could not comprehend. At all. But I looked darn cool carrying around that big old book.) so I’m sorta backtracking now and reading popular teen lit stuff because it. is. so. good.
So if you like to read, or even if you don’t, you should pick up the Daughter of Smoke and Bone by Laini Taylor. I don’t really want to tell you that much about it because it is that good and I want you to read this post and go, darn that hook at the top of the page is so cool and Smoke and Bone is really cool sounding name and I don’t really have anything to read while I bum by the side of the pool this weekend, hmmmm…. But I also can’t really contain myself so I’ll tell you a few things: the main character is an artist and her hair is naturally blue (and the author’s hair is unnaturally pink. more on that later.) and she’s in art school and she draws awesome illustrations of these crazy looking monsters and all of them are real. Go read Daughter of Smoke and Bone.
And if you have some free time, check out the author’s blog because she’s pretty cool too. Oh yeah, and her hair is hot pink. http://www.lainitaylor.com/
So, I have a confession. I took a class called Jazz Music in America last semester, and it turned me into a horrible music snob. I would only listen to jazz. I would tell anyone who would listen quirky stories about Miles Davis, who was actually kinda mean, or Louis Armstrong, who used to give away pocketfuls of money every night he played a gig (See that? I even say gig. Ew.) and who I’m convinced is one of the best people of all time. It was bad. I probably deserved to be smacked. With a Justin Bieber CD. Anyway, I’m now in recovery. My car radio is tuned to the station that plays only ten songs, three of them by Nicki Minaj, on repeat.
Let me first say that people who like jazz are not snobby. They’re actually really chill, cool people. Jazz musicians, especially, are neat because a huge part of jazz involves being able to come together with a group of people you’ve never met and improv pretty complicated pieces of music…anyway.
People who only listen to jazz and tell you early and often that they only listen to jazz? Especially if they don’t play an instrument? Ahem. That was me. I apologize. Anyway, while I was on that crazy music kick I discovered this artist named Esperanza Spalding. She won Best New Artist at the Grammys awhile ago and she is absolutely incredible. The song above is off her newish CD, Radio Music Society, and the tracks have a lot more singing on them than some of her other stuff does. I like that it’s different and I love the song above because it’s about being proud of your heritage and where you come from, especially in the African American community. You can watch the music video here- http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Nppb01xhfe0
Also Esperanza’s hair is fantastic. You should go on spotify and listen to all her stuff. I also really like Precious and Cuerpo y Alma and Really Very Small by her. :)

Small Herb Garden

Super cute, right? I know. My roommate and I do a lot of cooking, so when we were discussing decor for our room next year she said, “We should have an herb garden!!” And I agree. Yes. Yes we should. But to do that we also need a sunny window, and the buggers need to grow a little before we make it back up the mountain and they have to stay indoors. (Not so good. Herbs aren’t exactly indoor plants. But we want to try.) So I discussed the idea with my mama, who is a plant magician/whisperer/sensei and I decide I wanted three herbs—mint, basil, and parsley.
Well.
It got a little out of hand because we found a stall at the farmer’s market that was selling their organic, pesticide-free (yay!) herbs for $3 each. Oh, and by the way if you buy 5 you get the sixth free. So yeah. It turned out a little, um, bigger than expected.

Yeah. A wee bit bigger than expected. Ahem. Ahem.

Purple basil, yum yum.

Cute lil’ labels.

These birdies were my mama’s idea, aren’t they adorable?
So we have thyme, oregano, purple basil, regular basil, mint, and parsley growing in this sweet garden of ours. We’ll have to revisit the issue come August, but the plan is to transplant some of the herbs to a new pot so they can live in our dorm room next year. :) Now I just have to find some recipes where I can use these babies. We’re gonna use the parsley in the next round of homemade veggie burgers that we make… I’ll let you know how that goes. Have a fantastic Memorial Day! More to come….
I’m Back!
So, it’s been forever since I’ve been on tumblr, and here’s why:
One: I started college, and these pesky little things called classes invaded my free time. Like a lot. But I finished my freshman year on the Chancellor’s list. Which is, like, alright.
Two: I have discovered pinterest. It might be sacrilege to talk about how amazing pinterest is on tumblr, but I don’t even care. I love it. I love the crafts, the food, the amazing photography, the food…. anyway.
So, for those of you who are strict tumblr-ers, let me explain the wonders of pinterest. It’s an online bulletin board where you can “pin” things into certain category boards. I have an entire board dedicated to bicycles, and I am not ashamed. You can also type things in the search bar, say mustaches (another one of my favorite things. but I don’t have a board dedicated to it. I just occasionally repin (read: reblog) mustache typography or jokes. (More on that later.) and other people’s pins and boards that have to do with mustaches come up on your dash (hehe. see what I did there?)
ANYWAY, I have a board called Projects for this Summer which, whoa, has several projects and ideas I would like to complete this summer. Something I have learned about pinterest: there’s how the picture looks, and then there’s how it looks when you do it. Which is what I want to blog about. So, I have ten-ish projects here: http://pinterest.com/rindalmj/projects-for-this-summer/ that I will be attempting this summer. I plan on sharing the success/failure of these projects with you here. First up: an herb garden. Talk to you soon!
